Tape Express

For a certain generation, cassette tapes have a special place close to the heart. The thrill of recording the Top 40 every Sunday evening and the ensuing frustration at being unable to edit out the DJ speaking over the end of each song will be familiar to a great many people. You know who you are, dancing round the bedroom with a tennis racquet guitar under your arm, unable to forget that humble 90-minute format. The way we consume our music has marched firmly into a digital future, but spare a thought for all those lonely tapes, collecting dust under the bed (along with your original Walkman), by completely reviving them with the ingenious Tape Express. Using the included EZ Tape Converter software, you can plug the Tape Express into your computer (via USB cable), play the songs you love and have them converted instantly into MP3 files. Those MP3 files can then be taken anywhere you'd take your other MP3s - into your iTunes library, your iPod or MP3 Player, burned onto CD and generally taken across all the usual digital platforms for your own personal use, and you can power it either by USB or our old friend the AA battery. How versatile is that? Looking not unlike an old personal tape player (presumably because it is a personal tape player), but with a somewhat more contemporary design, it's sleek and small enough to be taken anywhere you go, and functions just like your old Walkman - in case you're craving the feel of tape over MP3. You can even use the audio output to connect the Tape Express to your hi-fi or any external amp. It's a great piece of retro cool that manages to look modern, and functions with the future in mind - bringing back all those forgotten tunes and maybe prompting you to pick up that tennis racquet guitar again.

Product wont even install on my (relatively new) PC. E-mailed manufacturer for help, no reply after a week. I guess i'll have to return product to IWOOT as it is obviously faulty

Buy if you don't need high quality
Date: 03 March 2010
Very easy to setup and use, but introduces a loud hiss in the recording, which you can somehow fix with the advanced software (then it is not so easy). For old low quality tapes it is OK. Anyway, what else can you ask for at that price?

Thinking ahead earns brownie points

I bought this for my mistress (yes, that's right) who was being bought an iPod by her sister at the same time. Being a real 60’s music fan (although she’s not really old enough to have actually “been” there) she has miles of cassette tape on numerous shelves. She regularly tunes into Classic Gold and tapes hours of the show, editing out the adverts and the talkie bits. Getting an iPod she is bound to want to convert those scores of cassettes into MP3.
And that indeed was the case. I can assure you that anyone in a similar position (having lots of cassettes – not being a mistress) this gadget is a must. She was very pleased with it because……….
The instructions are simple and extremely clear. The operation is a breeze; she had it up and running inside ten minutes. The sound reproduction was more then adequate and at the moment her sister has borrowed it and there are a queue of others waiting in line keeping her stock high as she requests small favours in return for the loan. It works very well and does everything it says on the box.
Yes, one very happy recipient who made sure I was happy soon afterwards.

Disappointing build quality
Date: 19 January 2010
Great piece of kit - does exactly what it says it will, and reliably. Works a treat. What lets it down is the workmansip of the casing. It looks great, but handling it reveals that it is cheap plastic. The 'metal' bits are not metal - they're silver painted plastic. A shame, really. as I'm not sure how robust this will turn out to be.

Hardware's a brilliant idea; software? Hmmmm...
Date: 08 January 2010
Bought this for my dad to convert his old tapes to put on CD.
Whilst the device itself is pretty good (except that it lacks a tape counter for you to know where abouts you are on a tape), the EZ Tape Converter software is a bit lacking.
It's supposed to split tracks for you, but it didn't work and there are no settings to give you any degree of control at all.
Forgetting the software though, the device itself registers itself as an audio input device, so you don't need a cumbersome tape player and audio leads to plug it into the MIC/AUX IN inputs, etc, etc.
If you have a wave editor, eg. Adobe Audition - or probably even the sound editor you get with it, Audacity - and you have some experience in editing digital audio waveforms (not too hard to pickup if not) you can use this to record an entire tape, as the wave editor software will pick up the sound via USB and it will appear in your editor as an audio waveform.
Then you just need to split the wave file you get into individual tracks (you can clearly see the breaks between tracks) and save them in whichever format you want.
So all-in-all, worth the money for the convenience of the hardware, but just don't expect much from the supplied software!

Fantastic gadget. Purchased it for my partner who is a music freak and technophobe! He found it really simple to install and use and hasn't left it alone since. Good quality, very good value for money. If you have tapes you need one of these!

Very disappointing
Date: 05 January 2010
I thought this product would free up space taken up by old cassettes as they would easily be converted to mp3s. Howeverthe supplied software does not seem to work; it stops part way through the conversion process. There is also some software from Audacity supplied which I suspect would get the job done. However I find it less than user friendly and I really don't feel like spending a day getting to grips with software before being in a position to convert my music. I'm very disappointed. If you already have a reasonable knowledge of this type of software then you'll probably be quite happy as you'll figure it out. If you just want something that does a nice quick conversion - save your money.

Either I have particularly difficult cassette tapes or the Tape Express is not powerful enough, as the speed of the tape when playing back and recording gradually slows so that the whole thing becomes ridiculous.
Therefore, for me, this is only usable for the small parts of the beginnings of tapes. Not really what I needed.

Needs accessories to be purchased (not explained)

You need to have iTunes downloaded to your PC (not explained in the manual). You also might need to purchase an AC adapter as the AA batteries might not last.

Temperamental. Sometimes it's a breeze, at others it won't download to iTunes. Sometimes it records both sides, sometimes only one. Hit and miss.

what a fantastic idea! I have tapes from long ago of my children when they were very young, telling stories, singing songs and some of their favourite old nursery song tapes that they would now like to play to their children, I can now put them onto cd and add them to their stockings, they will be delighted!

Brilliantly simple gadget
Date: 22 November 2009
This is so easy to use, within 10 minutes of opening the box I had learnt how to transfer a very precious old tape recording of my grandfather's accordian music onto MP3 file on my computer - how fantastic! You can even plug in ear phones and listen to your old tapes from the product or play through the computer speakers - excellent !!!
