We all enjoy a bottle of wine from time to time, but if you want to enjoy it properly you need to let it breathe*. That's why the last glass of wine out of the bottle always tastes better than the first (and here was us thinking it was because we were drunk). The Vinturi Wine Aerator makes your wine taste fantastic from the first sip. It's remarkable how easy this gadget is to use - you simply hold it over your glass and pour wine into the top. The wine gets filtered through the gizmo (it's all very technical) and pours into your glass. At some point during this process the wine takes in enough oxygen to awaken all of those lovely aromas and flavours, saving you the job of decanting the wine and then distracting yourself so you don't get impatient and neck it before it's ready. The set includes a table stand for you to pop the Vinturi in when you're not using it and a pouch to make sure it doesn't get clogged up with dust while it waits patiently in a drawer for your next wine night. Being the dedicated IWOOTers that we are we couldn't just sell you this without trying it out (we're so selfless) so we bought a decent bottle of wine from the high street and performed a taste test. We poured two glasses of wine: one was straight out of the bottle and the other was passed through the Venturi Aerator. The difference was quite staggering. The first glass was quite bitter and a lot of the flavour seemed to be subdued - we could tell it was there, but it hardly set our taste buds alight. The second glass was amazing. The bitter after taste was completely absent and the flavours that were subdued in the first glass danced la cucaracha on our taste buds. For great tasting wine without the wait nothing matches the Vinturi Wine Aerator. *Contrary to popular belief uncorking your bottle and leaving it on the kitchen counter for a few minutes isn't enough - there's not enough surface area for the wine to be properly aerated, so it's best done in the glass or in a decanter. The downside is that both of these methods can take ages. I had originally seen this at Wente Vineyards up in Livermore and put it in the back of my mind to get one at some point. It was good timing yesterday, as I was headed to a private luncheon with Dan Duckhorn and a handful of LA sommeliers. No one knew what the Vinturi was nor had they ever seen it, so it was fun to play "show and tell". Skeptics stopped being skeptical when they tasted what it did for the very young "Migration" Pinot Noir from Duckhorn. The overly youthful, oaky tannins on the finish were GONE! The wine's finish was elegant and subtle, like the more expensive "Goldeneye" Pinot that Duckhorn produces. The young Merlots also softened and improved after being Vinturiated.
